Can you feel it?
| Hello, Can you feel it? It's a slow-motion political earthquake and you are at the epicenter. One blogger calls it "The Shift" -- the change in Congress and the country since the historic November election in which fed-up Americans rose up to defeat corrupt politicians from coast to coast. But it's not just who was defeated. "The Shift" is also about who was elected. And the fundamental changes those freshmen members of Congress -- and their supporters -- are bringing to America. Exhibit A: Jerry McNerney, your new Congressman Congressman McNerney, who campaigned as a renewable energy expert deeply concerned about the impact of global warming, was just appointed to the brand new House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. Of course, just a few short months ago the Republican leadership, including former 11th District Rep. Richard Pombo, were denying the reality of the climate crisis. Now, the new House leadership has launched a new Committee dedicated to addressing energy independence and global warming, appointing Jerry McNerney, who spent 20 years researching and creating new energy technologies before arriving in Congress. "I am excited to begin the work of this important committee, including the discussion of exploring and expanding new energy technologies," Congressman McNerney said. "Moving in this direction will not only address the harmful effects of global warming and protect our environment, but will lead to economic stimulation and the creation of an entire spectrum of good-paying jobs here in the United States." http://weblog.jerrymcnerney.com/2007/03/mcnerney_named_.html That's not all. The House of Representatives also overwhelmingly passed Congressman McNerney's first bill on Thursday by a vote of 369-55. The Congressman is only the second newly elected member to move a bill through the House in the 110th Congress. You can find out more about this important bill and post a comment for Jerry here: http://weblog.jerrymcnerney.com/2007/03/house_overwhelm.html Finally, when hes not in Washington, Jerry is making it easy for residents of the 11th district to discuss their views with him. A few weeks ago, Congressman McNerney launched "Congress At Your Corner" -- an innovative new program to spend his weekend time talking with constituents at grocery stores, shopping centers and cafes. As the San Jose Mercury News wrote of one Congress At Your Corner event, "lobbyists pay to have this kind of face time with members of Congress. But inside the darkened supermarket -- the power was out -- Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, was ready -- eager, even -- to hear what District 11 residents had to say, no cover charge needed." Read more about these unique events and post your comments here: Reaction to Congress At Your Corner: "This is wonderful... I wish every congressman would do this" Mercury News: "Where constituents go, lawmaker follows to listen" "Congressman, coffee and chat": McNerney meets Manteca residents on Main Street From taking on the climate crisis to passing his first bill in the House to being more available and accessible, Congressman Jerry McNerney is working for the people of the 11th district. Don't ever forget that, without your people-powered support, this momentous "shift" would never have been possible. Thank you for everything you do. Eden James P.S. Thought you knew everything there was to know about Jerry McNerney? Think again. WIRED, the popular high-tech magazine, just published an interview with the Congressman in the March issue. WIRED asked Jerry about his reception in Congress: "It's been incredibly warm. When Senator Jon Tester learned who I was, he did a bow with his hands stretched out. That was cool." email: info@jerrymcnerney.org phone: 925-833-0643 |
